11 Causes of Flatulence

Flatulence (aka farting) is an embarrassing body function that is important for your overall health. Some are loud and some smell, but most are silent, so you shouldn’t hold them back.

Kelly Jones MS, RD, CSSD, LDN of Kelly Jones Nutrition, states, “Farting can tell us a lot about our digestive health. It’s actually very normal to pass gas over a dozen times a day, and lack of gas may indicate less diversity in lower digestive tract bacteria.”

Your intestines should have a diverse and thriving microbiome that can promote good overall health. Your mood, fitness performance, immune system, and heart health will all benefit from a thriving digestive tract.

If you don’t seem to have enough flatulence throughout the day, then there are ways you can improve your microbiome.

Ideally, your diet should consist of plenty of complex carbs. Legumes, nuts, grains, fruits, vegetables, and seeds are all associated with good colon health.

The foods create fermentable fiber, oligosaccharides, and starches, which all form complex carbohydrates. Good bacteria thrive on healthy carbs. Excessive gas occurs because of fermentation. Farting lets you know your diet is rich in fermented foods and you have successfully created a thriving microbiome.
